Bringing the Actions of Jesus Into a Virtue-Focused Life: The Heart of Your Rule of Life

If we want our homes to become “Little Monasteries,” places where faith, peace, and goodness flourish, we need a living model for how to practice virtue in real time. No example is more perfect or transformative than the everyday actions of Jesus Himself. Our Lord’s consistent choices, His patience in chaos, courage in truth-telling, compassion for the outcast, and obedience to the Father are an invitation to weave virtue into the fabric of our daily lives.

Jesus and the Cardinal Virtues

The cardinal virtues, prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance, aren’t just abstract ideals. They were embodied by Jesus throughout His ministry, His relationships, His sufferings, and His quiet, unnoticed moments. To follow Him is to translate these virtues from Scripture into habit, memory, and family culture:

  • Prudence (wise decision-making): Jesus listened attentively to His Father and responded to each situation with discernment, whether in choosing His disciples or answering the Pharisees. In our homes, prudence means consulting God in big and small decisions, and thinking before we speak or act.
  • Justice (giving each their due): Jesus met people with fairness and compassion, restoring dignity to the leper, the tax collector, and the Samaritan woman. Living justice at home means treating all members (and visitors) with respect, honesty, and care.
  • Fortitude (courage in difficulty): In Gethsemane and on the cross, Jesus modeled unwavering strength in suffering. We imitate Him by persevering in trials, standing for what’s right, and encouraging one another to keep going, even when it’s hard.
  • Temperance (self-control and moderation): Jesus fasted in the desert, resisted temptation, and taught the discipline of prayer and simplicity. At home, temperance is seen in setting boundaries (with food, screens, words) and maintaining balance in all things.

Making a New Virtue a Living Rule

Truly Christian families and individuals don’t just admire virtue, they intentionally practice and grow in it, just as Jesus invited His friends to “come, follow Me.” The Rule of Life, a guiding pattern of habits and priorities for daily living, serves as the skeleton for this transformation. By choosing to focus on one new virtue at a time, and making it visible and actionable, we gradually shape our hearts and homes after Christ.

Imagine a Rule of Life where…

  • Each week, your family or household names a central virtue to practice.
  • You design prayers, mealtime blessings, or shared “examens” that reflect on that virtue in practice: “Where did I act courageously today? Did I show justice in my words?”
  • Small, symbolic actions are integrated, like a note of encouragement for fortitude, a family fast for temperance, or a justice-inspired act of charity.

Inviting Evolution: Your 10-Day Journal and Novena

Growing in virtue is a journey, not a one-time choice. That’s why our upcoming Wednesday blog post, “How to Create Your Evolving Rules of Life,” will guide you through a 10-day journal and novena specifically designed to help you choose, pray for, and practice a new virtue as part of your living Rule of Life.

  • Daily prompts invite you to reflect on Jesus’ example and examine your progress.
  • Each day of the novena focuses prayerfully on a different aspect of the chosen virtue, seeking grace to keep growing, and cultivating awareness of God’s work in your home.
  • At the end of the 10 days, you’ll not only better understand your virtue-in-focus; you’ll have concrete habits to keep it alive, and a template for building future “rules” as your faith matures.

In short:
By continually bringing the actions of Jesus into our conscious practice of the cardinal virtues, and making each new virtue a lived part of our Rule of Life, we honor Him in the details of ordinary living. We make our homes, step by step, into “Little Monasteries” ablaze with the light of Christ, and form hearts ready for sainthood, one virtue and one day at a time.

Stay tuned for our Wednesday blog post, where we’ll guide you through creating and living out your own “Rule of Life” with a practical 10-day journal and novena to help your family grow in faith, virtue, and unity.
